Indian Overview:
India stand at 15th rank among paper
manufacturing nation in the world. The Indian paper industry accounts for about
3.7% of the world’s production of paper. The estimated turnover of the industry
is INR 60,000 crore (USD 8.5 billion approximately) and its contribution to the
exchequer is around INR 4,500 crore. The industry provides employment to more
than 0.5 million people directly and 1.5 million people indirectly.
Most
of the paper mills are in existence for a long time and hence present technologies
fall in a wide spectrum ranging from oldest to the most modern. The mills use a
variety of raw material viz. wood, bamboo, recycled fibre, bagasse, wheat
straw, rice husk, etc. In terms of share in total production, approximately 25%
are based on wood, 58% on recycled fibre and 17% on agro-residues. The
geographical spread of the industry as well as market is mainly responsible for
regional balance of production and consumption.
The
per capita paper consumption in India at a little over 13 kg, is way behind the
global average of 57 kg.
India
is the fastest growing market for paper globally and it presents an exciting
scenario; paper consumption is poised for a big leap forward in sync with the
economic growth. The futuristic view is that growth in paper consumption would
be in multiples of GDP and hence an increase in consumption by one kg per
capita would lead to an increase in demand of 1.25 million tones.
The business is fragmented with
over 750 paper mills, of which only 50 mills have a power of 50,000 TPA or
more. As regards, 72% of the total installed capacity of paper production in
India is accounted by West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa, Karnataka,
and Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Kerala, Bihar, and Assam
together account for about 26% of the total paper production in India.
Few statistics on Indian Paper Industry:
Ref: IPMA
Present demand is 13.1 million
tones with domestic production of just 11.4 million tons, export of 0.5 million
tones and import of 2.2 million tones which is expected to touch demand of 23.5
millions tones by 2024.

The growing use of documentation
will continue demand for writing and printing paper.
The exponential enlargement of
e-commerce in the nation has opened up the latest horizon and could donate
significantly to the demand where the paper is being lengthily used for
packaging. Though India’s per capita utilization is quite low compared to
global peers, things are looking up and a requirement is set to rise from the
present 13 MT to an estimated 20 MT by 2020.
